Dame, i've just found this topic of yours and read it all 9 pages non-stop. I totally feel all what have happened to you because the same things exactly are happening to me.
I've been here for 2 years now and so far, nothing in terms of employment, etc ever comes to me. I mean NOTHING. Before moving here, I worked in Supply Chain for IBM for 2 years and i never could imagine that i would be unemployed so bad as this now. Seriously, even I try jobs as waitress, cleaning, etc, no luck at all. It's not that we're not skilled enough, it has nothing to do about skills here i guess. It has something to do with discrimination in many respects. Danes are more preferred despite possibly being underskilled. Now I have got enrolled in a master degree at CBS, hoping this is a key instrument to facilitate my future. After 2 years and finish the school, i would not know what to do if I still have no luck. I cant move back home because my husband is a Danish. Besides, I really have lost everything in the past 2 years..now all i have is him for whom Im staying here :( |

I can so totally relate. And this is what makes me the angriest, when clueless "Don't like it? Leave!" people say that kind of garbage, because so many of us have given up nearly everything, or bankrupted ourselves to get here. Oh, and try asking for relocation costs. Legal aid practically laughed at me when I brought it up, because of course, in Denmark the sexes are equal. They have absolutely no concept of what is is to be us, do they? |

Damestjernelys,
I read your reply concerning the possibility of revalidation as a preparation for leaving (or staying for that matter). Even if you choose not to accept it, I am personally so relieved and happy that someone in the system seems to be making an effort. And believe me, this stuff concerning a fleksjob and also 10 weeks psychiatric help is a BIG thing in connection with the system here. This offer is unusual and it feels like you may have met some genuine good will.
Re the US. You may want to be aware of the changes in the US which mean that the differences between the two social systems have widened. I know because I moved back and forth with my Danish husband. Generally, if you are well-educated in a field where your job is well paid and secure, then you are far better off in the US in terms of day to day living. The returns to higher education are much higher in the US, while in DK they are the lowest in the world because of high taxes, wage compression and high prices. However, there are some issues of which you may want to be aware.
The US is a great place to get medical treatment but a poor place to pay for it. Consider getting whatever medical help you can here in Denmark, away from the US. This is for mostly financial reasons. Insurance coverage for psychiatric help is very, very hard to get in the US. Either one's health insurance would exclude it , in which case one could not afford it. In your case, moving to the US with a preexisting condition, you may be denied coverage for that condition, or just denied period.
If your husband has health coverage through his work, you will very likely be eligible also, regardless of preexisting conditions. But be aware that if he loses his job or if you become single, you will typically lose that coverage.
If you are treated in Denmark, you may find that you can start with a clean slate in the US and you may find that there is some welcome good will here, too.

I know I'm pretty much screwed in the US regarding my psychiatric problems. I had crap for coverage for them before I even moved here and I can only imagine how much worse that'll be when I move home.
But there's no job, no life, no friends or anything else which compel me to stay here. Why should I stay in a place where I can't enjoy the same rights as everyone else; where I have to worry whether I'll get to stay, be kicked out or if the laws will change every couple of years? Where my husband can't even enjoy all of his rights as a Danish citizen.. BECAUSE OF ME?! It's not worth it. I won't stay for the health insurance. And let me tell you something... the psychiatric care here isn't all that dandy. Even without coverage in the US and having to pay out of pocket (which I have done before over there,) I would get better treatment than I get with the public system here. I am currently fighting tooth and nail to get a goddamn referral for inpatient therapy for my problems. I won't get to see my shrink about that until SEPTEMBER, and who knows how long it will take for me to find out whether or not I will even get to be put into a place. My mom found a place for me in the US that specialises in my problems, will take people with no insurance and offers payment plans on a sliding scale based on need and income. They would even help with travel costs. I know because I called and talked to the administrator of the facility. My problems are not things that can be 'cured' by May of next year. I cannot start with a clean slate when I move. Regarding revalidering or whatever I might qualify for, I still don't know what I can get because the kommune is dragging their arses... no one wants to help me find out what I can get or if I can get it. |
